Thrifty Thursday: Spring Break fun on a Budget

Spring Break is approaching quickly. In the past, we have always taken some sort of family vacation, even if it was only for a day or two, but that is not in the budget for us this year, so we’ve been brainstorming budget-friendly family fun ideas.

Here are a few that we’ve come up with so far:

*Free family night at the Children’s Museum ~ Check out your local zoo and Children’s Museum.  Our local zoo has several free family fun days and our local children’s museum has a free family night once a week!

*Family game night ~ Between the big Toys ‘R Us sale and the Amazon sale, we stocked up on family games during December.  We’ve had a few game nights here and there, but I think a big family game night is in the works and the kids are super excited!

*Family movie night ~ We’re going to pull out the pillows and blankets, pop some popcorn, and let each of the kids pick a favorite movie.  We’ll either raid our movie collection or use a free Redbox code. If we go to Walgreens to use a free Redbox code, maybe I’ll use some of my RRs and let everyone pick out a “movie theater” box of candy, too!

*Treasure Hunt ~ Have you heard of Letterboxing or Geocaching?  Essentially, it’s like a game of hide and seek.  People hide a letterbox or cache and then post clues (in the case of Letterboxing) or GPS coordinates and clues (in the case of Geocaching) online and you try to find them.  You can enter your zip code and find locations that are near you.  We’re excited to go on our first treasure hunt!

Do you have a tip for family fun on a budget or another Thrifty Thursday tip?  Feel free to link up and share!

Heads up on an Upcoming Walgreens Deal ~ Glade Fragrance Collection Diffuser or 3 Wick candle for $1.99!

I love the Glade Fragrance Collection candles and I love them even more when I can find a deal on them!  Starting on Sunday (3/7), Walgreens will have the Glade 3 Wick candles and the Reed Diffusers on sale for $5.99.  There is a $2 Glade coupon in the March 2010 Walgreens coupon book (you can usually find these on the rack with the ads at the front of the store).  There is also a $2/1 Glade manufacturer’s printable coupon.  Use the two coupons together and get a reed diffuser or a candle for $1.99 each!
I recommend printing the coupon now.  Hot printables are going quickly these days and if you wait until Sunday to print it, the print limit most likely will have been met.  You can print two per computer (press the back button on your browser)

The latest Darcus Tori Freebie: Yellow Citrine Round Stud Earrings

The free offer this month is Yellow Citrine Round Stud Earrings. These are regularly $59.95, so this is a great deal!

1. Click here to add the earrings to your shopping card.
2. Use promotion code 0801
3. Click the “add” button to activate the code.
4. Complete the check-out. (You do have to pay shipping which is typically about $5)

If you’re like me, you tend to be a skeptic when it comes to these “free” offers. I usually don’t post offers unless I have tried them myself or have information from reliable sources that they are legitimate and I can assure you that this offer is legit and that the quality is good.

A Month of Frugal Recipes Day 2: Chicken Tortilla Soup

This is one of my favorite “from the stockpile” recipes.  It’s a bit spicy on it’s own for my kids, but once we add some sour cream, cheese, and chips, they love it!

Ingredients:
3 cans chicken broth (100% FF)
3 cans cream of chicken soup (98% FF)
3-4 chicken breasts
1 can Rotel
Mrs. Dash original seasoning
salt and pepper to taste

Place chicken breasts in the bottom of the crock pot. Add Mrs. Dash’s seasoning to taste. Add broth and cream of chicken soup, and Rotel. Cook on low 6-8 hours. Shred chicken in crock pot.  You can freeze the leftovers, too!

To serve: (if frozen)

Defrost in refrigerator. Reheat on stove. Serve and top individual bowls with desired toppings (tomatoes, green onions, avocadoes/guacamole, cheese, tortilla chips, sour cream, etc.)

WW points =  3 per serving – this makes a TON of soup (at least 8 servings for my family), the 3 points, of course, does not include any “toppings” such as cheese, sour cream, and chips!
