As I sit and watch the news coverage following the devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma, my heart is heavy. I think of 24 parents who have third graders who are waiting and hoping when I have a third grader myself. I can’t comprehend the devastation or the loss. All I can do is cry and pray.

If you have loved ones in Oklahoma, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Here is some helpful information you may wish to share with friends and family if you are able to reach them:

As I sit and watch news coverages following tragedies like this one, I often feel helpless and am looking for ways that I can do something, anything to help.

Here are some things you can do to help:

1. Pray for those affected

2. Consider items that you can donate as donation information comes forth. Here is a list of items that were needed following Joplin:

Hygiene items (such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes)
New or used clean clothing and shoes
Nonperishable food items
Trash bags and dust masks
Flashlights and batteries
Blankets
Infant supplies (baby formula, baby food, diapers, and wipes)
Small toys (stuffed animals, dolls, etc.)

3. Make a donation to reputable organizations – Even if you don’t have money to donate, in the past following these types of disasters, there has been a

Text REDCROSS to 90999 to make cash donations
Text STORM to 80888 to contribute $10 to Salvation Army relief efforts (or donate via phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY)

4. Donate blood – After Joplin, there was a desperate need for blood, particularly O-negative blood. If you are able, especially if you are near the area, consider donating your blood.

Lemon Chicken Saute Recipe

One of the perks that came with my marriage was a whole lot of yummy new recipes! We affectionately refer to this Lemon Chicken Saute recipe as “Grandma’s Chicken” at my house because it is a recipe that originally came from my husband’s grandmother who is an awesome cook! The sauce for this recipe is SO good and the chicken is so tender that you can “cut” it using your fork, which is a plus if you’ve got kids. In case you’re wondering, it’s kid friendly, too! My kids love it!

Lemon Chicken Saute Recipe

Author: Melissa’s Bargains

Prep time: 5 mins

Cook time: 20 mins

Total time: 25 mins

Serves: 4

Kid friendly, yummy lemon chicken saute recipe

Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (this is what we need for our family, adjust accordingly for yours)
3 T all purpose flour
PAM no-stick cooking spray
⅓ cup butter or margarine (we use I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter)
⅓ cup teriyaki sauce
3 T lemon juice
1 tsp minced garlic
½ tsp sugar

Instructions

Roll chicken in flour to coat.
Spray large skillet with Pam or other cooking spray. Add butter and melt over medium heat.
Add chicken breast and saute till lightly browned on one side. Turn and brown on second side, 5-7 minutes, or until lightly browned.
Remove chicken and set aside.
Stir teriyaki sauce, lemon juice, garlic and sugar into skillet.
Return chicken to pan and simmer 3 minutes. Turn chicken over, and continue cooking until fork tender (2-3 minutes)

Bacon…it’s what’s for dessert?!

As I’m writing this, I’m cringing inwardly and laughing at the same time. You have to understand that I’m not a bacon lover. In fact, my children had bacon for the first time when we went to IHOP for breakfast one day. I’ve been known to use bacon bits from time to time in recipes that call for bacon because I can’t bring myself to actually cook it, but that’s pretty much as far as it goes.

I experienced a mixture of horror and shock when I encountered this display on my table at Burger King last summer. Bacon Sundae?! Are they serious?

Then, while perusing the list of shakes available for the Sonic Summer of Shakes promotion, I noticed this gem and had to do a double take! Bacon and chocolate, perhaps I guess? Bacon and caramel, maybe?? But PEANUT BUTTER AND BACON? I’m completely lost. Do people actually order this??

After doing a bit of browsing online, I discovered that this bacon dessert craze is apparently more serious than I thought. I actually discovered an entire BLOG devoted to bacon dessert recipes that includes treats such as chocolate covered bacon, bacon cookies, and even bacon ice cream. Sea World San Antonio: Tips for Parents!

Our family first visited Sea World San Antonio when my daughter was fairly young. It has since become one of our favorite family getaways and we usually get season passes each year!

If you’re visiting Sea World San Antonio for the first time, here are some survival tips:

1. Plan Your Day – Shows do not run continuously, and there are typically only a few show times for each one daily. They fill up quickly, so it’s a good idea to come up with a game plan for your day before you go. Also, check out the feeding schedules for the dolphins and sea lions. There is limited availability and it’s an experience your kids won’t forget! NOTE: You do need to pay for a tray of food (usually $5) When you’re planning your day, it’s also a good idea to look at the park map! The park is big and going back and forth across the park with your kids is one way to ensure meltdowns that will ruin your day.

If you are traveling with smaller children, you may want to factor in nap time or a break. The Sesame Street Bay of Play is a great place for younger kids to get some down time! If you’re planning to visit Aquatica, the water park, capacity is limited, so get there when they open.

Here are some “must see” shows:

Azul® – This show combines beluga whales, acrobatics, pacific northwest dolphins, and birds and the results are spectacular! This is definitely my favorite show and I never miss it!
Cannery Row Caper - This is the “sea lion show” and I think the story line on this show has been the same since I was a kid, but I still love it every time, and the kids will enjoy it, too!
Shamu Rocks! This is the night show with great rock and roll favorites and a lot of energy. As an added bonus, by that point in the day, many families have already headed home, so it doesn’t usually fill up as quickly as the regular Shamu show

2. Parking - General parking is $13.856 if you purchase online or free if you have a season pass. They also offer Shamu’s Preferred parking, which will give you reserved parking at the entrance of the park. This is $5 more, but has been worth it every time for us, especially during the summer months. With kids who are melting down, and especially if you’re loaded down with strollers, diaper bags and other gear, it really does make a difference at the end of the day.

3. Stay hydrated - During the summer months especially, it will be HOT and it’s important to stay hydrated! You can bring a small cooler with up to 6 water bottles with you into the park. We usually invest in the souvenir bottles because refills are just $.99 and you can re-use them on future visits! NOTE: If you bring juice boxes, you will not be able to take the straws into the park!

4. Food and snacks - If you’ve got little ones, then you probably know the importance of making sure they’re fed! A stroller, sippy cup, and a few snacks go a long way and you’re actually allowed to bring single serving snacks with you into the park! There are lots of dining locations available throughout the park as well. If you’re planning on eating lunch or dinner at the park, you may want to plan to eat earlier or later than “typical” to avoid the crowds.

5. Bring a change of clothes – If you sit in the splash zone, you will get SOAKED. This can be a nice way to cool off during the summer months, but it might also be an unexpected surprise for younger children. You will also get wet if you ride the water rides like Jorney to Atlantis or Rio Loco. If you visit the Sesame Street Bay of Play, there is a splash pad area, and trust me, your kids will want to play!

6. Deals on tickets - You can find the best prices on tickets online. You’ll save $10 off a one day adult or child admission. If you’re planning to visit the park for more than one day, consider a Sea World Fun card, which gives you access to the park for the remainder of the calendar year or a Sea World Season pass, which gives you access to the park for an entire year plus additional benefits like free parking and discounts on food and merchandise in the park. I usually get a season pass for myself for the parking and discounts and then the fun cards for my husband and the kids.

LEGO® KidsFest is fun for the entire family!

My son LOVES LEGOs® and I had been planning to take him to LEGOLAND® Discovery Center in Dallas this summer, so when the opportunity presented itself for us to attend LEGO® KidsFest in Houston, (especially since we were getting free tickets) I couldn’t turn it down!

I honestly didn’t know what to expect, especially since my husband wasn’t going to be able to go with us. I guess I viewed LEGOs® as more of a “guy” thing and figured I’d just be along for the ride. One of the things that impressed me right from the start was that this is definitely a family experience! I loved seeing big kids and little kids, moms and dads, and even in some cases grandmas and grandpas working together on different activities! The entire experience is interactive and I think I had as much fun as the kids did! Families participated in challenges together, played LEGO® games together, and built together! In a time where I most often see parents entertaining themselves on their cell phones or tablets at kid friendly places, I can honestly say that the only time I saw parents on their phones here was to take pictures of their kids having fun!

I LOVED seeing my two kids work together to help each other on different activities! They were so proud of themselves when they finished making these LEGO® keys (and I think my little guy was especially proud because he helped his big sister finish hers) and they loved being able to use them to “open” the treasure chest to get their own special surprise!

One of the things my kids loved was being able to see some of their favorite characters larger than life! The detail of the displays in the LEGO® Model Museum area was INCREDIBLE! They had Marvel action heroes, characters from Toy Story, Star Wars favorites, and even characters from Harry Potter!

Making LEGO® “snow angels” was fun, but the kids decided that being buried in LEGOs® was even MORE fun! The LEGO® Brick Pile was a favorite with MANY kids!

I wasn’t familiar with LEGO® Chima, but my kids had a blast with them and my son informed me that some of his birthday money will be used to purchase some! If you’re brave enough to wait out the lines at the LEGO® Chima Arena, you have the opportunity to show off your skills and compete against others and I noticed they were giving away free sets to people as they were leaving! My son was also fascinated by the LEGO® Master Builders and informed me that he was going to be one when he grows up! My daughter loved the LEGO® Friends building area (my son even enjoyed that because the LEGO® Friends have so many tiny accessories and other options that other LEGO® sets don’t have!) They also loved being able to add their creations to the LEGO® Art Gallery!

If you haven’t been to LEGO® KidsFest before, here are some tips:

Buy your tickets in advance: The Houston event was sold out before it even started! If you procrastinate, most likely you won’t get tickets!
Arrive early: There is SO much to see and each area takes time! We were there for 3 hours and still didn’t see everything we would have liked to.
Feed your kids before you go: There is food available there, but who wants to stop and spend time eating when there is so much to see and do? Plus, if your kids are fed, you’re less likely to have whining and meltdowns!
Watch your kids: There are a LOT of people and it only takes a second to lose track of your kid. There are Lost Parents Meeting Spots, but you really don’t want to have to use them!
Have a game plan before you go: You can view a map and a list of activities online before you go. Try to prioritize your activities because you probably won’t have time to see and do everything.

If you have a LEGO® KidsFest coming to your area, it’s DEFINITELY worth checking out! If you have a LEGOLAND® or LEGOLAND® Discovery Center in your area or an area that you will be visiting, I’d say that’s worth checking out, too! Our trip to LEGO® KidsFest earned me the “best Mom EVER” title for the night at least and we made some great memories together! This has been my favorite interactive kid experience since we went to Disney World as a family last summer!
