The following scenarios are for those are just starting to shop at Walgreens and who have few, if any, RR to spend:  $24.45 in merchandise for $5.46 OOP, $2 RR left to spend

TRANSACTION #1:
Buy 2 Benadryl, Sudafed, or Tylenol Cold – $4.99/each

Use $5/2 coupon

Spend $4.98 OOP, get a $5 RR

TRANSACTION #2:
Buy Schick Hydro – $2.99
Buy Schick disposable razors – $5.99
Buy Butterball chicken broth – $.50 (w/ in ad coupon)

Use $4/1 Schick disposable coupon
Use $5 RR

Spend $.48 OOP, get a $2.99 RR and a $1 RR

TRANSACTION #3:
Buy Colgate Professional – $3.99
Buy 2 Butterball chicken broth – $.50 (w/ in ad coupon)

Use $1/1 Colgate coupon
Use $2.99 RR
Use $1 RR

Spend $0 OOP, get a $2 RR

Some helpful tips:
*At Walgreens, you can use ONE manufacturer’s coupon and ONE store coupon per item

*At Walgreens, you cannot do a promotion more than once in a transaction and earn Register Rewards. (for example, if you buy 2 Colgate toothpastes, you will only earn RR for one)

*You also typically cannot use the Register Rewards earned from a promotion on the same promotion and earn Register Rewards again. For example, if you buy the Colgate and use the RR from that to buy another one, your RR will not print.

*Register Rewards are considered to be “manufacturer’s coupons” and you can only use one manufacturer’s coupon per item. You will have to add “filler” items. The in ad coupons often have good, inexpensive filler items. (there are LOTS of great filler items this week – check out the weekly match-ups for ideas)

*If you are using more than one RR in a transaction, always give the RR with the highest value FIRST. Sometimes strange things happen with coupons and taxes and even if you think you have planned out your scenario very well, you will end up with more overage than you planned for.

*If you are buying items that would result in a “free” item or “overage” when combining a store coupon and a manufacturer’s coupon, give the manufacturer’s coupon FIRST, and the store coupons LAST to avoid beeping/issues at the register! Make sure that you are purchasing enough items in your total transaction to “cover” the overage. You will not get cash back and you will have to add items to cover the overage or they will not take the coupon.

*If your Register Reward doesn’t print for some reason and you have fulfilled all of the obligations for the “deal” (including not using RR from the same parent company to pay) DO NOT let them tell you it is because you used coupons! Chances are they didn’t print because the catalina machine is not working. You have two choices: you can return your items and try again or you can contact the catalina company by doing the following:
*The store will give you a form to fill out and mail in to catalina
*Call 1-888-8coupon, option 3
*Use the online form to contact them: Contact Catalina Marketing (when I have tried contacting them this way, my results have not been very good….your best bet is to call)

This post is part of Becentsable’s Grocery Gathering.

Get your coupons for the 4/11 inserts NOW!

When I post these “hot coupons of the week” posts, I often have people ask me if it’s “worth it” to buy coupons.  If you’re wanting to stockpile items, it is totally worth it to pay a small price for coupons to get items for free or close to free later.  If you don’t believe me, check out my Kroger scenario here and see how I got 5 Snuggle dryer sheets, 5 Uncle Ben’s rice packets, and a free movie ticket for less than the cost of the movie ticket!

Having said that, there will be two inserts (one Red Plum and one Smart Source) in the paper this week.  My Coupon Hunter has them posted now!  If you order them early in the day, they should ship today (and if you e-mail her because you need them for a sale, she will verify the shipment date)

Here are some codes you can use on the site as well:

HOT – 10% off orders over $5
SHIP – Free shipping on orders over $5 (you can combine this with the code above)
TEN – 10% off orders over $5
PRIORITY – Free shipping on orders over $15

Here are the “hot” coupons I am seeing:

RED PLUM

Buy One, Get One Free CoverGirl face product (expires 5/31/10) – these coupons always match up well with deals at CVS and Walgreens

$.75/1 Del Monte No Sugar Added Fruit cup (4 pack) – These should be pretty cheap after coupons at Target or Walmart

$.40/1 Del Monte No Sugar Added canned fruit – if your grocery stores double or triple coupons, these should be pretty cheap!

$1/1 Maybelline New York mascara (expires 5/11/10) – pair two of these with a BOGO free sale and get cheap mascara!

$3.75/1 Vaseline Sheer Infusion product (expires 5/9/10) – that is a high dollar coupon and you should be able to get some pretty cheap lotion when you pair it with sale prices!

SMART SOURCE

$3/1 Enfamil Premium formula (expires 5/31/10) – if you have a little one that uses formula, these can be paired with formula checks and sale prices – every little bit helps because formula is EXPENSIVE!

$1/3 Hershey’s Kisses, Reese’s, Hershey’s Miniatures and York candy or $1/2 Hershey’s Brand caramel or Meltaway chocolates (expires 6/11/10) – keep your eyes open for candy deals to pair with the movie tickets deal here

$5 Target gift card WYB three Scrubbing Bubbles products – if you need to stock up on cleaning products, there are also Scrubbing Bubbles manufacturer’s coupons to pair with this!

Kroger Movie tickets promotion ~ Another scenario

Kroger has a promotion right now where you can receive a free movie ticket (or 15 free music or ringtone downloads) for purchasing 10 participating items.  I have read online that different stores in the Kroger family have different participating items, so please check your ad for details!

Here’s another scenario to “work” this deal:

Sobe Lifewater is 10/$10 and is included in the promotion! There is a Buy One, Get one free Sobe printable here and a Buy One, Get One Free Sobe printable here (thanks Jane!) You should be able to print two of each per computer. If you can get your hands on five, here’s a scenario for you:

Buy 10 Sobe Lifewater – $10

Use 5 BOGO free printables

Spend $5 OOP, get a catalina for a free movie ticket! (that’s almost half the price of a movie ticket)

Here’s the breakdown of what I did earlier this week:

Buy 5 Snuggle fabric softener sheets – $3.50/each
Buy 5 Uncle Ben’s 90 minute Ready Rice packets – $1.69/each (love these things!)

Use 5 $3/1 Snuggle fabric softener coupons (3-28 RP)
Use 5 $1/1 Uncle Ben’s rice coupons (2-21 RP)

Spent $5.95 OOP, earned a catalina with a code for a free movie ticket! (that’s less than I would have spent on the movie ticket alone and I got 10 other items we really needed…also, I’ve had several people ask if it’s “worth it” to buy multiples of coupons and this trip alone should show that it is!)

Frequently asked questions:

Do you really do multiple transactions at your stores?

In the past, I usually had $20-30 ECB on hand, so I didn’t have to break up my transactions as much as I did when I first started, but now that I am starting over, yes, I am doing multiple transactions. If you are doing multiple transactions, I recommend that you let the cashier know up front that is what you are planning to do. If there are several people in line, let them go in between your transactions. This gives you time to clip your ECBs and get prepared for your next transaction.

My store was out of all the freebie items first thing this morning. Can I get a raincheck?

This all depends on your store. I have contacted corporate about this before because some stores in my area give rainchecks and others won’t. According to corporate, this is up to the individual stores.

I bought the wrong item or I bought the RIGHT item and my ECB didn’t print. What can I do?

If you bought the right item, show the store clerk your ad and your receipt. They should be able to manually print your ECB at the store. If they don’t know how, you can call customer service and they can add one to your account that will print within 48 hours (you have to wait 48 hours from your purchase time to do this so they can “see” your transaction in their computer).

If you bought the wrong item and didn’t receive ECBs, you can do a return and purchase the correct item. If you paid using ECBs, they will have to give you money on a gift card.

Welcome to the Ultimate Blog Party 2010!

Ultimate Blog Party 2010

Last year, when my blog was only about 6 months old, I read about the “Ultimate Blog Party” (sponsored by 5minutesformom.com) and decided to join the fun…..and fun it was!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!  Here’s a little bit about me and what you’ll find on my blog:

Who am I?

I’m a wife, mom, educator, and “extreme couponer” among other things.  My husband and I have been married for almost 8 years now (we’ll hit that “milestone” in June) and we have a beautiful daughter who will be 6 next month and a super cute son who will be 3 tomorrow.  I have worked in education for 11 years now and I love it because it gives me a chance to make a difference in the life of children.  Around the time my daughter was born, I quickly realized that having a baby really does change everything and one of the big changes was the expense!  I started reading message boards and using coupons here and there to save money.  At that time, I thought I was doing pretty good.  Somewhere along the way, I discovered “extreme couponing” and now I love to see how much bang I can get for my buck.  I also learned to play the “drug store game” (shopping at CVS and Walgreens) and so now I get most of my health and beauty items for free or close to free.  Our family grocery budget is $40 per week and we’ve been living on that since January 1, 2009.  If you read my Menu Planning Monday posts, you’ll see that we’re not starving and we’re actually eating some really yummy things.

About my blog

I started my blog about 18 months ago as a way to share my deals with my friends and family.  It has grown along the way and I enjoy being able to help others learn to save money!  Here are the weekly posts you’ll find on my blog:

Scenario Sunday ~ Scenarios for your favorite stores like CVS, Walgreens, and Target (I also add match-ups for Publix and Kroger on Wednesdays when those ads come out)

Menu Planning Monday ~ My weekly menu plans including recipes and Weight Watchers points

Tip of the Day Tuesday ~ Tips about couponing and other money saving tips and ideas

Website of the Week Wednesday ~ This is a new feature.  I’ll be highlighting a new money-saving website every week!

Thrifty Thursday ~ This is one of my favorite weekly posts.  I share “thrifty” ideas and I have a link-up for other bloggers to share their thrifty tips.  I have gotten some great ideas from other people’s posts!

Freebie Friday ~ Links to great freebies plus free weekend fun for your family!

Savings Saturday ~ Sometimes I post scenarios on Saturdays and I also try to post pictures of my $40 weekly grocery trips

I’m also a big fan of the Dave Ramsey plan.  My husband and I took the Financial Peace University class a year ago and it has changed our lives.  Sometimes I share our experiences with that program.  My goal this year is to have a 100% cash Christmas and so I’ll be sharing my tips and progress along the way if you want to join me!

If you’re new to couponing and not really convinced yet that it really can make a difference, you might want to check out my “What I’m Willing to Pay for Things” post!
