Ways to give in November: donate your spare change!

Since we are Dave Ramsey fans and follow a “cash only” plan, we end up with a lot of change.  We typically put all of our change in a “change jar” which helped us to pay for a family vacation this summer and which is almost full again and will go toward buying Christmas gifts.  As I was leaving Walgreens this weekend, I noticed that the Salvation Army “bell ringers” (I’m sure there’s an “official” title, but I don’t know it) were out.  I let my kids put our extra change into their container.  They were excited to do it and it’s a small and easy way to help someone else in need.

Ways to give in November: Adopt a Soldier

Yesterday we celebrated Veteran’s Day.  In honor of our military, consider having your family “adopt a soldier” for the holidays.  You can find wish lists and information on how to send packages and where to send packages here on Any Soldier.  Many soldiers are in need of basic hygiene items that you probably have on hand already in your stockpile such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, soap, deodorant, razors, and feminine hygiene products.  They also are looking for snack items.  You can find more information ideas of what to send in care packages here.

Keep in mind that the USPS recommends that you mail packages to Iraq and Afghanistan by today (11/12).  You can find more information on USPS recommended mailing dates here.

Ways to give back in November: donate to a local food bank

There are some great deals on canned food items right now.  While you’re stocking up at rock bottom prices, consider donating some extra food to your local food bank.  You can also check with your church or your school to see if they are conducting a holiday food drive.

If you are in the Houston area, here are some ways that you can donate locally:

Houston Food Bank (look for the red barrels at your Kroger and Randalls grocery stores – download a list of most needed items here)

Katy Christian Ministries
