Cooking With Kids Thursday: Homemade Bath Soap Crayons

Okay, this is one of those cooking with kids ideas that isn’t so much a recipe as it is a fun way to get the family in the kitchen, learning how to follow directions and measure ingredients.  Also, lets not forget the hours of fun your kids will have using these crayons in the bathtub later!  Thanks to Kiboomu! for this fun activity.

Here’s what you need to make these:

  • Clear glycerin soap base cut into cubes
  • 3 or more soap color dyes (or food color dyes)
  • Essential oils in your favorite smells (optional)
  • Glass measuring cup for melting soap
  • Spoons for mixing colors and fragrances
  • Ice cube trays or round crayon molds

Cooking with Kids Thursday: Rice Krispie Treats Fun Cups

There are a million different desserts that you can mold Rice Kripsie Treats into, but I thought this was a really fun idea to do with kids.  You can make the cups ahead of time or do that with the kids.  Then you can set up a dessert bar with fillings and toppings and let the kids design their own fun cup.  I like the idea of doing fresh fruits with whipped cream on top.  Ice cream sundaes would be pretty yummy or even pudding.  See what I mean… the possibilities are endless!

Here is what you need to make these:

  • 3 Tbs. butter or margarine
  • 1 package (40 oz.) regular marshmallows or 4 cups miniature marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies or Cocoa Krispies cereal
  • pudding, ice cream, frozen yogurt, fresh fruit or any other filling you wish
  • any toppings you choose

Cooking with Kids Thursday: Muddy Buddies

I know I just did a post on Chex mix not that long ago, but my friend introduced me to this Muddy Buddies mix (a.k.a. Puppy Chow) and I just had to share.  I think I ate almost a whole batch myself.  It was so good!  Of course, my kids loved it too and were less than thrilled that I finished it off so quickly.  The kids and I will definitely be making more very soon.

Here is what you need to make this:

  • 9 cups Rice Chex®, Corn Chex® or Chocolate Chex® cereal (or combination)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Cooking with Kids Thursday: Italian Cheesy Chex Mix

If you are looking for some appetizer ideas for your upcoming New Year’s Eve party, here is an idea that both kids and adults will love!   My kids could eat this all in one sitting, no problem.  We just substitute mixed nuts for the soy nuts and we use garlic powder instead of garlic salt.  There are other versions of Chex mix recipes on Pillsbury, as well as a lot of other tatsy appetizer ideas.

Here is what you need to make Italian Cheesy Chex Mix:

  • 3 cups Wheat Chex® cereal
  • 3 cups Rice Chex® cereal
  • 1 cup pretzel nuggets
  • 2 cups small cheese-flavor crackers
  • 1 cup salted roasted soy nuts
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 3 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
