PSA to all my readers

This morning started out like any other Saturday morning. I ran to Walgreens to “roll” some RR and decided to stop off at Kroger to pick up a few things on my way home. While I was unloading my groceries, a car pulled up behind me, someone jumped out, pinned me against my vehicle, and stole my purse. While this was all happening, I had no concept of time, but the officers that responded said it probably happened in a minute or so. This was in a busy parking lot in broad daylight (around 9 a.m.). The offiers told me that people are becoming more and more desperate and willing to take greater risks as a result. They said this is becoming more common.

I know that you probably get those e-mails all of the time just like I do about safety in parking lots. I read through them, but I guess I just never thought that it could happen to me and certainly not during the day in a busy parking lot. So, my PSA (“public service announcement”) today is to travel in pairs or be SUPER careful when you are out doing your bargain shopping!

Here are a few articles about parking lot safety that may also be worth checking out:

After today’s events, I will probably be taking a break from shopping for awhile…

  1. I hope you're okay! I'm so sorry that has happened to you. Thank you for the warning. I know I forget sometimes to be on alert – especially when I'm by myself.

  2. Oh my. I'm glad you are okay. I hope that you have taken pre-cautions with your credit cards by cancelling them. I recently got an email from a friend who had a neighbor that this happened to only a few weeks ago. They actually took her purse in the middle of the day, in the middle of Walmart! Security cameras got the whole thing and they still charged over 2k on her credit card while she was talking to security in the store before they left. That is pretty bold!

  3. I am so sorry that you experienced this … it certainly is a wake-up call to read this from a gal that I "know" in the blogging world vs. one of those emails that gets forwarded. If you don't mind, I'll plan to link this post on my blog so that others can hear the warning.

Praying that you will rest well, process this with the help of family and friends, and be back out getting your good deals very soon.

I'm so sorry to hear that. That really stinks that people have to act like that! I love your blog & all of your tips!

  5. How scary! I'm glad you're okay. I hope you didn't lose much money. Did they get your coupons? What a pain to cancel credit cards. I guess we all need to be more aware.

  6. I am so glad you are okay! We have had a lot of stuff like this in our part of town too. I had 3 friends who had their purses stolen last week.

  8. I'm sorry to hear that, hope you're okay. God bless..

  9. Oh My! I'm so glad you're okay. I know how you feel. I was held up at gun point last year when I was pregnant! I was afraid for a while after that. The fear goes away after a while but you always continue to be careful.
    Take care of yourself!

  10. Oh my goodness! I am so glad you are okay. How terrifying.
Thanks for the reminder of being safe. I shop with a toddler and newborn and admit that I am only paying attention to them.
I am going to be more careful from now on.

I am so sorry this happened to you.

  12. I'm so glad you're okay! Thank you for the warning – I know I need to be more aware and careful.

  13. I hope you are okay. Thanks for the reminder of being safe. I shop with a toddler and newborn and I only pay attention to them, not what's going on around me. I am going to be more careful from now on. We will be praying for you.

  14. Im so sorry! Im glad you werent hurt but I cant imagine how scary that must have been and how much of a hassle it will be to sort out 🙁

  15. Thank you, Melissa, for taking the time to tell people about this. I'm sure it must have been a very traumatic experience for you! Keep in mind that your safety is the most important thing–couponing, money, frugality means nothing if you are not around to do it!!

We have had a rash of ATM attacks in our area. One even happened at a bank drive-thru (the ATM side) during banking hours. People are getting very desperate. They ran up, grabbed the money from the gentleman and shot him. Luckily, the shot wasn't life threatening, but it could have been.

Take care of yourself and come back to shopping and blogging when you are ready. We'll wait for you.

    God bless.
