Thrifty Thursday: More items to stockpile this week – peanut butter and canned soups!

If you are on a budget, but still wanting to build a stockpile, there are some great items that you can add to your stockpile this week for next to nothing!

Here’s what you can add for cheap from Target:

*Mott’s Applesauce or apple juice – Target has a gift card offer this week where you get a $5 Target gift card when you buy 5 Mott’s applesauce or apple juice. The applesauce is priced at $1.69 for the “no sugar added” varieties and $1.75 for the other varieties. The apple juice is priced at $1.75 also and includes the “Mott’s for Tots” varieties.

Even without coupons, this is a GREAT deal, especially if you have a $5 gift card on hand.

Here are some scenario ideas:

Buy 5 Mott’s applesauce (no sugar added varieties) – $1.69/each

Use $5 Target gift card (if you have one on hand – I always keep one on hand for deals like this!)

Spend $3.45 out of pocket, get a $5 Target gift card

Buy 5 Mott’s apple juice – $1.75/each

Use a $5 Target gift card

Spend $3.75 out of pocket, get a $5 Target gift card

**If you don’t have a gift card to start out with, you can keep “rolling” the gift card you earn from your first transaction into your next transactions.

*Skippy Peanut Butter – There is a $1/1 Target printable coupon for Skippy peanut butter. Depending on where you live, there were .40/1, .75/1 or $1/2 Skippy peanut butter coupons that came out in the 10-4 RP insert. Skippy peanut butter is $1.75-$1.99 depending on your store location. So, if you combine the Target coupon and the manufacturer’s coupon, you can get free or really cheap peanut butter (depending on which coupon you have). If you don’t have multiple Skippy coupons, you can still get them on Ebay. This seller here has some available. I’ve ordered from her before – her turn around time is quick and she’s great to deal with!

*Snuggle fabric softener – Snuggle fabric softener is priced at $3.99 this week at Target. There were $3/1 coupons in the 10-4 Red Plum insert, so these are $.99/each (or FREE if you have the Target mailer coupon!)

Here are some items you can add to your stockpile from Kroger:

*Campbell’s chicken noodle or tomato soup is on sale 2/$1 – there were .40/4 coupons in the 9-13 and 10-4 SS inserts. My store will double/triple up to 3 “like” coupons. So, I can buy 12 cans of soup, use 3 coupons (which will double), and pay $3.60 out of pocket (or .30/can)

*Refrigerated biscuits – This week, Kroger has Pillsbury biscuits, crescents, or rolls – 3/$5 (through next Tuesday in my area – check your ad for details)

Items to Stockpile this week: applesauce, apple juice, cereal, and refrigerated biscuits

If you’re new to stockpiling, I thought I’d give you a “heads up” on a few items that you can stockpile this week and still stay within your budget:

*Applesauce and apple juice: This week Target has a deal where you get a $5 gift card when you buy 5 Mott’s applesauce or apple juice products. These ranged in price from $1.69 (for the “natural” items) to $1.75 at my store. Hopefully you already have a Target gift card on hand from a previous deal!

If you do, here’s how it breaks down ~

Buy 5 Mott’s applesauce – $1.69/each

Use $5 Target gift card

Spend $3.45 OOP, get a $5 Target gift card – you get the applesauce for $.69/each!

Buy 5 Mott’s apple juice – $1.75/each

Use $5 Target gift card

Spend $3.75/each, get a $5 Target gift card – you get the juice for $.75/each!

*Cereal! Randalls has Kellogg’s cereal on sale (the ad runs through Tuesday in my area) for $1.49/each when you buy 5 selected varieties (varieties priced at $1.49 included Apple Jax, Fruit Loops, Raisin Bran, Frosted Flakes, Rice Krispies, and Crispix). There were also several varieties that are $1.99/each when you buy 5 (this included the flavored varieties of Frosted Mini Wheats and Raisin Bran Crunch). There were $1/2 Kellogg’s cereal “blinkie” coupons right in front of the cereal. There were also $2/2 coupons in the 8-30 RP insert and several $1/1 Rice Krispie coupons and one coupon for a free box of Rice Krispies that I had gotten from Vocalpoint.

I got 20 boxes of cereal for $7.01 this weekend. I bought a variety of Apple Jax, Fruit Loops, Raisin Bran, Frosted Flakes, Rice Krispies, and Crispix. I used several of the $2/2 coupons (thanks Martha!), my $1/1 Rice Krispie coupons, and the free box (and they took off the full $3.79 for the free box, which was the amount BEFORE any discounts!). That’s .35/box and we won’t have to buy cereal again for a LONG time.

Even if you don’t have the $2/2 or Vocalpoint coupons, you could still buy 10 boxes for $9.90 using the blinkie coupons found in the cereal section, which still ends up being less than $1 per box!

Stockpiling on a budget: dog food and cheese sticks!

I know that a lot of people think that Target is an “expensive” place to shop, but I save SO much money there and it is one of my favorite places to shop! Here’s what I got at Target today for $2.32 out of pocket: 7 bags of Chef Michael’s dog food, 14 cans of Chef Michael’s dog food, 21 cheese sticks, and 2 packages of Bounty paper towels (2 rolls in each package).

Target has the small bags of Chef Michael’s dog food on sale for $4.26/each. There are $1.50/1 Target printable coupons and there is a manufacturer’s coupon for $3 off. So, I got .24 in “overage” for each bag of dog food.

Target also has BOGO free Chef Michael’s canned dog food coupons. There is also a BOGO free manufacturer’s coupon. So, you get two for free using both coupons.

There is a $1/2 Market Pantry cheese items Target coupon. The single cheese sticks are .40/each at my store.

The packages of paper towels were on clearance for $1.98. I had two $1 off Bounty paper towel coupons making them .98/each!

My Target only allows one “like” Target coupon per transaction, so I did these in single transactions at two different stores. I basically bought one bag, two cans, and three cheese sticks in each transaction. On the last two transactions, I bought the paper towels also.

In the past week, I bought a total of 18 bags of dog food and 36 cans. With what we already had on hand (six big bags of Iams from another Target deal), we have at least six months worth of dog food! If you don’t have the $3 manufacturer’s coupon from the inserts, there is a $2.50 printable here, so you can get it for $.26/bag with the Target IP.

Here’s what I got last Saturday for FREE (using coupons and the overage from the Chef Michaels):

(Thanks Martha for all of the extra dog food coupons!!!!!!!!!!!)

Building your stockpile on a budget: cheap items to stockpile this week

One of the reasons that I am able to spend so little on my weekly grocery budget is because I have a good stockpile of the “basics” that we use frequently. My stockpile has been accumulated over time and I plan my weekly meals around what is on sale in the stores that week and what is in my stockpile.

If money is tight one week, I can always cut back on grocery expenses and we can prepare meals using what we have on hand. My stockpile also comes in handy in times of emergency (when a hurricane hits around here or there is a threat of a hurricane, stores clear out quickly and when Ike hit, some stores were closed for a few days, and it was nice to have everything we needed on hand) and has come in handy when money has been tight.

If you’re looking to start your stockpile on a budget, here’s a hot deal:

*Ragu Pasta sauce – Target has a .75/2 printable coupon. There were $1/2 coupons that came out in last week’s inserts. My Target stores have these on price cut for $1.52, so they are $.64/each after coupons! There are also tear pad coupons for free pasta when you buy two Ragu, so if you have these, you can get two jars of Ragu and a package of pasta for $1.29. You can get TWENTY jars and 10 packages of pasta for $12.90.

When there are “hot” deals like this, I usually stock up on multiple coupons. I don’t typically buy multiple copies of the newspaper. I just buy multiples of what I need either through a coupon clipping service like The Coupon Clippers or through eBay.

There are still coupons available for both of the coupons I mentioned on ebay. You can check out what’s available here. When buying coupons on eBay, make sure you check the seller’s feedback and also that you check the shipping rates!

A few other coupons that may be worth “investing” in for your stockpile:

*.50/1 Barilla Piccolino or whole wheat pasta – if your stores double coupons and these go 10/$10 (which they have in the past when these coupons come out), they will be free. Otherwise, you get them for $.40-.50/each which is still a good deal

*.35/1 or .50/1 Steamfresh vegetables – these also traditionally go 10/$10, so if your stores double or triple coupons, they will be FREE!

I’ll keep you posted on other stockpile deals!

Tip of the Day Tuesday: Stock up in season

Buying “in season” doesn’t just apply to fruits and vegetables. When you have been couponing for awhile, you start to see trends in the sale items. If you match your coupons with the sale items, you can often get things pretty cheap

This time of year is the perfect time to stock up on:
*broth (chicken/beef) – you can usually brand name for .30-.40/can
*cream soups (cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, etc.) – you can usually get Campbells for .50-.60/can
*baking items (chocolate chips, flour, sugar, etc.) – if you have a Kroger store, take advantage of the Mega Sale going on right now!
*soup in general (you can get cans of Progresso or Campbells ready to serve for .50-$1 and sometimes free depending on your coupons)
*canned vegetables (you can get them anywhere from .39-.50/can right now)
*cold medicines

If you want to start stocking up, at Walgreens this week, you can get ButterBall chicken broth for .39/can. Campbell’s cream soups are 5/$4. Don’t forget the Mega Sale at Kroger for baking items!

Some people stockpile so that they have an emergency reserve of goods for times of need (unemployment, natural disaster, etc.). I have used mine for both situations. Having a stockpile also helps you to save money on groceries. When I see that there is going to be a good sale on something and there are coupons to match, I usually get a large number of coupons (10-20) and stock up. Then, I don’t ever HAVE to pay full price for these items. I am able to wait until there’s another good sale and stock up again. It’s also nice because I usually don’t have to worry about making last minute trips to the grocery store.
